Mattress Buying Guide: How to Choose the Ideal Bed for Comfort and Style

Selecting the right mattress can feel like navigating a maze of options, but with a little knowledge, you’ll be well on your way to finding the perfect match.

FINDING YOUR COMFORT ZONE

Your sleep position plays a crucial role in determining the ideal mattress firmness. Stomach sleepers often prefer firmer mattresses for proper spinal alignment, while back and side sleepers may find comfort in plusher tops that contour to their body's curves. If you tend to sleep hot, consider mattresses with gel-infused foam for a cooler night's rest. Conversely, memory foam can be a cozy choice for those who often feel chilly while sleeping. Remember, comfort is subjective, so take time to consider different options to find what works for you!

CHOOSING THE RIGHT SUPPORT

The right support for your mattress is just as important as choosing the mattress itself. You have three main options:

PLATFORM BEDS

Platform beds offer solid, all-over support as a single-level bed base that can support a mattress without additional support.

BUNKIE BOARDS

Bunkie boards, typically 1-2 inches high, are made of a flat piece of material (usually plywood) that goes between the mattress and the bed frame. They’re ideal for bunk beds, as well as all mattress types, especially foam and latex. While affordable, they’re not as durable as box springs.

Box Springs

Box springs, made of a wooden or metal frame and standing 2-9 inches tall, absorb impact and reduce wear and tear on the mattress. They come in three varying types depending on the manufacturer: standard (9 inches), low-profile (5-6 inches), and ultra-low profile (2-4 inches). Box springs are great if you want to make your bed taller and improve airflow to keep your mattress cool. They’re compatible with most bed frames, including metal, wooden, and upholstered styles.

Pro tip: Be sure to measure your bed frame before selecting a box spring size. Most often, there is a specific height that will fit within the bed frame so the box spring doesn’t peek out. If you need extra height with minimal adjustment, you can combine a box spring and a bunkie board.

Mattress Height Considerations

When considering mattress height, standard options range from 8 to 14 inches. Plusher, taller mattresses can be more comfortable for those with arthritis or joint pain, offering extra pressure relief and contouring. Aim to keep your mattress height within 4 inches above or below your nightstands. When calculating total bed height, factor in your bed frame height and the height that your support (box spring and bunkie board) adds.

Protecting your investment

Once you’ve found your ideal mattress, don’t forget to protect your investment. A good mattress protector will keep your bed clean, extend its lifespan, and maintain warranty validity. If your mattress is stained or ripped, that usually voids the warranty. Some protectors even offer additional benefits like allergen reduction and cooling properties.
